Yesterday, I began to answer a question I received one of our youth. They asked, ‘Why should we pray if God is already going to do what He wants?” I think that is a great question and the answer is found in 1st Timothy 2.
1st Timothy 2:1-5 says, “I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. 2 Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. 3 This is good and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth. 5 For, There is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity--the man Christ Jesus.” (NLT)
Notice, verse 4 says that God wants everyone to be saved and understand the truth. It is God’s will and desire that everyone will be saved. However, we know that there will be people who will choose to reject God. This reveals a powerful truth to us - the will of God is not automatic. What God wants does not automatically come to pass.
In verse 2, it tells us to pray for those who are in authority. Why? So we can live a peaceful and quiet life marked by godliness and dignity. Our prayer life directly impacts our quality of life.
It is the will of God that we daily pray for those who are in authority. Will you yield to His will and partner with Him today? When we pray, we partner with the plan of God for our lives - just like Daniel. Daniel’s prayer life positively influenced political leaders - yours can too!
