James 4:8a (NKJV)
Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.
Draw near - make near, to approach, also the same word used in the Septuagint of the priests entering the temple to make sacrifices to God or perform their ministry there. He is speaking to people who understood what it meant to come to the temple and offer sacrifices. The Jews use to offer sacrifices for many things, including the covering of their sins.
Heb. 10:12 tells us that Jesus offered Himself as a Sacrifice once for all mankind. So there is now no need to offer a sacrifice for the forgiveness of our sins. We confess our sins and ask God for forgiveness and the Blood of His Son cleanses us.
But the New Testament tells us that there are sacrifices that New Testament believers are to offer. Not of bulls, rams, sheep, and goats, but something else.
Three Things to learn About Offering Sacrifices from the Old Testament:
Now let’s look at the Sacrifices that we as New Testament Saints are to offer:
Rom 12:1
Holy - Morally blameless (without spot or wrinkle.)
Remember sacrifices of the highest quality.
A Consecrated Life - A Life That Is Set Apart
Acceptable – fully agreeable
Service – worship service
The way we live our lives is worship. It’s a lifestyle.
SACRIFICE #1 – Your Body & How You Live Your Life
Phil. 4:15-19
SACRIFICE #2 - Your tithes and offerings are considered a Sacrifice.
Remember, it’s not just important that you give it, it’s also important how you give it. The motive of your heart matters.
Heb. 3:1
Profession – confession – saying the same thing Jesus is the High Priest of Your Words!
Your words are a Sacrifice. (SACRIFICE #3)
Are you giving Jesus anything that He can present before our Heavenly Father? Notice He presents the words that are in line with God’s Word.
John 5:30
You must put the Word of God in your mouth! There will be times when you are tempted to respond to the situation from your flesh or emotions, but you must speak the Word!
The Word of God, the promises of God, and what God has said to you concerning your life! When something contrary to that appears, SPEAK THE WORD ONLY!
Watch Your Mouth!
Remember the angel in Daniel 10:12, “I have come for thy words”The way you control your mouth has a lot to do with all of your sacrifices. Remember James says that if you can control your tongue, you can control your body? If you are having an issue with living holy, what is coming out of your mouth?
Rev. 5:8, 8:3-4
Your prayers are a sacrifice. (SACRIFICE #4)
Ps 141:2 Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrificeIt is compared to incense.
A life of prayer, is a life that smells good to God.
How does your life smell?
You need to have a life given to prayer. Communicating with Him, walking with Him.
Heb. 13:15-16
Sacrifice of Praise (Sacrifice #5)
We should be praising God and thanking Him continually!
Are you like the Israelites who complained and were disinherited or are you offering a Sacrifice of Praise?
Continually – not just when you fill like it, not just on Sunday, everyday, all the time.
(Ephesians 5:18-19) And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
Ps. 34:1- I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
DO GOOD & Communicate (Sacrifice # 6 & 7)
You need to be looking for opportunities to do good, to be a blessing!
We should be known for doing good!
Communicate – fellowship, partnership –help someone that needs help, partner up with someone else
Acts 10:38 – How God Anointed Jesus…
Gal 6:10 - do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.
These last two are telling us to get our minds of of ourselves and help somebody else. When you build a fire, you have something that can burn.
Heb. 12:29
What's on your altar?
Jhn 14:1, 27 (NKJV)
Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. ... 27 "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
Let - that means you have control of your heart
trouble - to agitate, trouble (a thing, by the movement of its parts to and fro)to cause one inward commotion, take away his calmness of mind, disturb his equanimity, to disquiet, make restless, to stir up, to trouble, to strike one's spirit with fear and dread, to render anxious or distressed, to perplex the mind of one by suggesting scruples or doubts
DO NOT let your hearts be troubled (distressed, agitated). You believe in and adhere to and trust in and rely on God; believe in and adhere to and trust in and rely also on Me.Peace I leave with you; My [own] peace I now give and bequeath to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. [Stop allowing yourselves to be agitated and disturbed; and do not permit yourselves to be fearful and intimidated and cowardly and unsettled.] (John 14:1, 27 AMP)
Resist fear like its the spirit of fear.
2Ti 1:6-7 (NKJV)
Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
