The Real Reason Jesus Flipped The Tables

In today's newsletter, Pastor Kerrick shares the real reason Jesus flipped the tables and why it should impact your life today. Read today's newsletter to start your day with faith and encouragement.

Then those who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: "Hosanna! 'Blessed [is] He who comes in the name of the LORD!' 10 Blessed [is] the kingdom of our father David That comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!" 11 And Jesus went into Jerusalem and into the temple. So when He had looked around at all things, as the hour was already late, He went out to Bethany with the twelve. ... 15 So they came to Jerusalem. Then Jesus went into the temple and began to drive out those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. 16 And He would not allow anyone to carry wares through the temple. 17 Then He taught, saying to them, "Is it not written, 'My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations'? But you have made it a 'den of thieves.' "

Mark 11:9-11, 15-17 (NKJV)

Today’s Devotional 📖

Good Morning,

Happy Holy Week! I hope you had a wonderful Palm Sunday yesterday! Do you know the real reason why Jesus flipped the tables in the temple on the Monday after Palm Sunday? Jesus wasn’t having a case of the Mondays. He didn’t have a bad temper. So why did He flip the tables?

I’ve heard people say that the reason was because people shouldn’t buy or sell things in church. But, that’s not the reason either. I’ve seen on social media people take this passage and say should that Jesus would flip the tables that people are trying to sit at. However, that’s not the reason either.

There was legitimate and Scriptural reason for the moneychangers and others to operate in their capacity. If that’s the case, why did Jesus interrupt them and clear them out? It’s simple. They were in the wrong place.

They had turn the Court of the Gentiles into a market place. There were cattle, sheep, doves, and more! The Court of the Gentiles was the closest place in temple non-covenant people could draw near to and experience God. However, instead of it being a place of prayer, it was a marketplace of extortion.

When Jesus said “house of prayer” and “den of thieves,” He wasn’t using random phrases. He was quoting Isaiah and Jeremiah. The fact that Jesus used the phrase “den of thieves” reveals that the practices were taking advantage of the people. Verse 17 says that He began to teach them using these two verses. Those verses were His opening texts.

As you read the parallel counts of the Gospels, you see that people came to Him and were healed of various sicknesses and diseases. Children even came into the temple singing the “Hosanna” of Palm Sunday. I share more about this in today’s podcast.

The takeaway I want you to leave with from today’s devotional is the importance of keeping things in the right place. The people of His day allowed things to be out of place and it led to bad decisions in the temple. How much more when our lives are out of order and things are out of place?

As you hear me say often, we must keep the Word of God first place and final authority in our lives. There are many important and good things in your life. However, you must keep them in the right order. This Holy Week, take time to reflect, pray, and ask God what things you need to re-order in your life.

Don’t say that you do not have time to do that or are too busy to do that. You are too busy to not do that. There’s so much more I want to share with you in today’s podcast. You can stream today’s podcast on YouTube, Apple Podcast or Spotify. You’ll be glad you did! I’m praying for you!
