The Lesson Of The Fig Tree

In today's newsletter, Pastor Kerrick shares what to do when it seems like your faith isn't working and what we can learn from the fig tree. Read today's newsletter to start your day with faith and encouragement.

Now the next day, when they had come out from Bethany, He was hungry. 13 And seeing from afar a fig tree having leaves, He went to see if perhaps He would find something on it. When He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. 14 In response Jesus said to it, "Let no one eat fruit from you ever again." And His disciples heard [it]. ... 20 Now in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. 21 And Peter, remembering, said to Him, "Rabbi, look! The fig tree which You cursed has withered away." 22 So Jesus answered and said to them, "Have faith in God. 23 "For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be removed and be cast into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. 24 "Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive [them], and you will have [them].

Today’s Devotional 📖

Good Morning,

Happy Holy Week! As we continue our journey through Mark 11, we arrive at the important and seemingly unusual time when Jesus spoke to the fig tree. Imagine if you were one of Jesus’ disciples. He walks up to the fig tree and begins to talk to it because it didn’t have any figs. That would seem unusual to you.

After Jesus finished speaking to the tree, He continued on His journey. The next day when the passed the tree again, the disciples realized that it had dried up from the roots. There are a number of things about this passage that are interesting to me and important for your journey.

As we covered this week, Jesus didn’t randomly choose words. He would say what He heard His Father say. When Jesus spoke the Father’s words to the fig tree, it seemed like nothing happened at all. However, that didn’t move Jesus.

Where did the words of Jesus go? To the root of the fig tree. Remember, the fig tree dried up from the roots. Often times, we get consumed with the fruit of the problem and never address the root. Do not be discouraged when it seems like your faith isn’t working. When you are speaking God’s Word to a situation, those words are going to the root of the problem. Don’t be moved just because it seems like nothing has happened yet. The words and your faith are dealing with the root issues.
