Did You Catch It?
Elisha picked up Elijah's cloak, which had fallen when he was taken up. Then Elisha returned to the bank of the Jordan River. He struck the water with Elijah's cloak and cried out, "Where is the LORD, the God of Elijah?" Then the river divided, and Elisha went across. When the group of prophets from Jericho saw from a distance what happened, they exclaimed, "Elijah's spirit rests upon Elisha!" And they went to meet him and bowed to the ground before him.
2nd Kings 2:13-15 (NLT)
Good Morning!
Can you imagine being Elisha? He had been Elijah’s protege for years and now he watches his mentor ascend into the sky. Imagine the thoughts and feelings that were rushing through Elisha’s mind as Elijah’s cloak gently floated back to the earth.
Instead of continuing to stare into Heaven, Elisha picked up Elijah’s cloak. Notice, Elisha didn’t just pick up the cloak, he decided to use it. We know from 2nd Kings that Elisha went on to perform twice as many miracles as Elijah through the power of the Holy Spirit.
You may be reading this email and thinking, “Well, what does have to do with me? I don’t have the cloak of Elijah.” My friend, you have something far better. I want to share with you another passage that parallels this story from 2nd Kings.
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere--in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." After saying this, he was taken up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no longer see him.
Acts 1:8-9 (NLT)
The Gospels share that Jesus’ earthly ministry began after the Holy Spirit came upon Him. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit would work in the lives of those who believe in Him. In the Book of Acts, Jesus ascends in a similar way as Elijah. His disciples stare into Heaven like Elisha. Ten days later, on the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit Who “cloaked” Jesus fell upon the believers in the Upper Room. These early disciples, like Elisha, began to operate in the power of the Holy Spirit. Guess what? The power wasn’t only for Elisha and the early disciples, it’s for you as well.
You don’t have to be an apostle, prophet, or be born in biblical times to operate in the Holy Spirit’s power. The Holy Spirit has a work He wants to accomplish today. Whether you are an educator, nurse, entrepreneur, media professional, executive, engineer, student, retiree, broadcaster, or athlete, the Holy Spirit wants to empower you to do wonderful things today. It’s time for you to believe that and catch the mentality that comes with it!
In our podcast devotional today, I encourage along the lines of today’s newsletter. You did not receive a junior Holy Spirit. The same Holy Spirit of the Book of Acts is at work in your life today. Stream today’s devotional and be encouraged with the truth that the Holy Spirit is at work in your life today!
